Borehole Pumps
Borehole Pumps

Borehole WellsBorehole wells are becoming increasingly popular as a clean environmentally friendly alternative source of water to the ever increasing costs of mains supply water. New Haden Pumps can provide a large range of borehole pumps suitable for all borehole wells, whether it be domestic, commercial or industrial applications. What is a Borehole A borehole well is a vertical shaft usually about 4-6” wide drilled to a depth of around 50-100m, depending on the depth of the water table at the sitting of the borehole. The upper part of the well is lined with a casing to prevent the collapse of the borehole walls & surface contaminants from entering the well. A typical borehole system consists of a submerged motor pump with an intake valve, if sized correctly it can provide water at mains pressure & flow. The origin of the water found in boreholes is supplied by aquifers, these are underground reservoirs which have filtered through miles of porous rock & are usually totally independent from sources of surface water in lakes & rivers. The water is filtered through many rocks & is uncontaminated by chemical s, however depending on its use there may be the need for some form of treatment to change the balance of minerals picked up from rock-strata. Borehole Pump Borehole pump is very versatile & can be used for a number of applications. In recent years the borehole pump is having a new revival, this is due to the ever growing concern of climate change & finite energy sources. In the ever changing industry there is an increasing demand to utilise the water stored in the grounds aquifer, this can then be used to provide water for a number of applications. ApplicationsRaw water supply - In remote areas where there is no mains water supply a borehole can be used to provides source of water Irrigation systems - Borehole water can offer a cost effective solution to irrigation e.g. large estates, golf courses or garden centres Geothermal - Heating/Cooling through heat exchanger & reversible heat pump Groundwater lowering/Dewatering Pressure Boosting Industrial & municipal applications WC Flushing Performance Borehole pumps are the only solution for applications that require increased levels of head, which can not be produced by a conventional system. The typical performance curve (fig.1) shows that the pump can provide high head solution across various levels of flow Borehole Well Licensing All boreholes whether they are newly drilled or existing are subject to an Environmental Agency (EA) licence & there are a number of variations depending on how the water is used & its method of rejection to the ground. These licences control the flow rate of water to/from the ground & the difference in temperature between the abstractions/rejection water. This aside the government is pushing for all developments whether they be new build or refurbishment to demonstrate green credentials & a reduction in carbon emissions. Considering these prominent factors boreholes seem to be a credible proven technology that can reduce carbon emissions, reduce demand for mains fed water supply & gain valuable BREEAM points.
